History of the sled dog

No one knows for certain when people first used dog to pull sleds. It seems likely that the practice of working dogs in harness originated among the natives of Eurasia. Certainly, Eskimos were using dogs to pull sleds 1500 years ago, but there is evidence that sled dogs date from 4000 or more years ago. Accompanied by their jackal-type dogs, the people of Central Asia migrated to populate the extremities of Siberia and the Arctic. These dogs, which were crossbred with the native wolf, developed over time into what became known as the Northern Breeds. From this early group of Northern dogs, the breeds developed their own individual characteristics, which have survived through the ages. Among this Northern Breeds, the Siberian Husky is probably the best known today.
